Choosing Steel for Railings and Architectural Metalwork

Railings and architectural metal live a hard life: people lean on them, weather works on them, and building inspectors measure them. The material choices below are what we typically fabricate with. Final sizing always follows the applicable building code and the project's engineering, so treat this as orientation, not a spec.

Material choices

Carbon steel is the workhorse: strong, economical, easy to weld, and it takes paint or powder coating well. For exterior work it needs a real coating system, because bare steel rusts.

Stainless steel costs more but earns it near pools, coastal air, food service, and anywhere the metal shows and must stay bright. Aluminum saves weight and shrugs off corrosion, which suits long exterior runs, though it gives up some stiffness against steel of the same size.

Tube, pipe, and solid stock

Most modern railing builds on round or square tube: clean lines, good strength for its weight, and it welds into crisp joints. Our tube laser cuts and copes the joints before welding, which is why frames fit tight and posts land where the drawings say.

Solid bar shows up in pickets and decorative work, and heavier structural sections carry guard duty in commercial settings. The mix on any given job comes from the design intent and the load the code requires the assembly to take.

Finish and installation

Exterior railings deserve a finish that outlives the punch list: powder coating through our partners, or paint systems applied in-house, over metal that has been properly deburred so the coating can bond. Interior feature work opens more options, including clear coat over raw steel and patina finishes.

What steel should I use for an outdoor railing?
