What Drives the Price of a Fabricated Metal Part

Fabrication quotes can feel like a black box, but the inputs are mundane: material, machine time, labor operations, finishing, and how many you order. Knowing which lever moves your price is the difference between value engineering and just asking for a discount.

Material: grade, thickness, and what falls on the floor

Material cost is the sheet or stick, not just the part. Grade and thickness set the base price, and nesting sets how much of the sheet becomes parts instead of scrap. Odd part shapes that nest poorly carry their drop with them; parts designed with nesting in mind share sheets efficiently, which is one reason production runs quote better per piece.

Stocked material also matters. A part cut from material on our rack ships faster and avoids mill-order minimums; an exotic grade sources per job with the lead time and pricing that implies.

Every operation is time

Each bend, weld, inserted fastener, tapped hole, and machined feature is a labor operation with a setup behind it. The cheapest operation is the one the design removes: a bend that replaces a welded joint, a formed flange that replaces a bracket, hardware only where hardware earns its place. This is exactly what a design for manufacturability review looks for, and it is why we do one before quoting.

Finishing and quantity

Finishing is priced by prep and process: paint, zinc, and clear coat run in-house, powder coating runs through our partners, and bare metal ships clean and deburred. Then quantity spreads every setup across more parts. The programming, fixtures, and first article cost the same whether the run is five parts or five hundred, so unit price falls as the batch grows. How can I lower the cost of my part without hurting quality?
